Device Description Language (DDL) & Device Descriptions (DDs)

What is a Device Description?
A Device Description or DD is an electronic data file prepared in accordance with Device Description Language specifications that describes specific features and functions of a device including details of menus and graphic display features to be used by host applications (including handheld devices) to access all parameters and data in the corresponding device.

DD Library
The HART Communication Foundation manages a library of Manufacturer Device Descriptions. DD Library updates are released every quarter. DD Library subscription services are open to all HART Communication Foundation members.

Individual DDs are available for download from the Product Catalog section of this website. All DDs are in binary format and are supported only by applications that support binary format.
